The Shift to GDA2020 - What Does it Mean For Your Existing Datasets?

We are seeing more datasets appearing in GDA2020. To ensure that all datasets align correctly, reprojection is often needed. For vector datasets, a simple on the fly reprojection is possible with "minimal" computational expense. However, where raster datasets require on the fly reprojection, the computational expense can be significant, and may result in your datasets becoming unusably slow. 

waterRIDE does not allow reprojection of aerial imagery as it is far too slow. As a result, all datasets must be reprojected into the coordinate system that your aerial imagery is in. Whilst this has been GDA94 based for some time, we are finding newer imagery coming through in GDA2020. This means older GDA94 based flooding datasets must be reprojected to align with GDA2020.

To help with this process, we provided a tool in 10.0.48 under Import->Change/Edit/Repair->Coords and Datums to reproject your gridded and TIN based water surfaces (wrr, and wrb, respectively).

Running as a batch, the process will resample (a projection conversion rather than a reprojection) your waterRIDE grids (*.wrr) to an orthogonal framework in the desired output projection. Once run, your datasets will be converted into GDA2020, not requiring any reprojection to display on your GDA2020 aerial imagery, thereby maintaining optimal performance. The tool will also natively reproject (no resampling) any TIN based water surfaces (*.wrb).

 In terms of other vector layers that you may use (eg cadastre, roads, properties etc), we suggest you try on the fly reprojection. To achieve this ensure your vector layer has its projeciton assigned, and that the projection of the view (View Contents panel) has also been specified. If this proves to be slow, either convert the layer's projection in GIS, or use the conversion tool on the GIS panel.

NZVD - Shifting Your Vertical Datum (NZ)

You may not be aware but there is a tool in waterRIDE to assist you in moving your existing waterRIDE surfaces to the new New Zealand Vertical Datum (NZVD2016) under Import->Change/Edit/Repair->Coords and Datums.
